London-based Dream-Folk band Something Sleeps is a collaboration between friends and stalwart songwriters Fiona Fey and Rey Yusuf (formerly of Tell Tale Tusk), joined by violinist Monica Viñoly and cellist Josh Considine. With their flair for emotive melodies and pithy lyrics, Something Sleeps are undoubtedly writing contemporary contributions to the classic folksong canon, while embodying the same self-defining DIY attitude of their peers from Cuculi Records and the wider UK alt-folk scene. The band's exquisite and arresting vocal harmonies are the heart of their music. Layers of voices meld and soar above guitar fingerpicking and interwoven string lines, suggesting a subtle 60s feel with a distinctly modern edge.
“Something Sleeps are a mesmerising live act, encapsulating traditional storytelling with glorious harmonies and innovative arrangements” - Soho Radio
Their debut album was released by Cuculi Records in 2024, and since then they have had radio play on BBC Radio Bristol and Scotland, Soho Radio and Ian Anderson's Podwireless. They have played iconic venues including The Green Note (London) and Band on The Wall (Manchester) as well as folk festivals such as Sidmouth Folk Week, Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, and Broadstairs Folk Week, where they had the privilege of opening up for Martin and Eliza Carthy. This was a full circle moment for Fiona and Rey, as one of the first folk songs they performed together with Tell Tale Tusk was High Germany, which they first heard through Martin Carthy.
Something Sleeps second album "Skin" is currently in production and is set to be released in 2027. The album features 9 tracks and contains themes of social justice issues and the effect they have on your inner world. The album is mostly self funded, with additional support from EFDSS.
You will find Something Sleeps at various showcases this year (Focus Wales, Manchester Folk Expo, and more to be announced.
